The Heart of Almaty
Start by soaking up the culture and history of Kazakhstan’s former capital.
Morning: Visit Panfilov Park to see the Zenkov Cathedral, one of the world’s tallest wooden buildings (built without nails!).
Afternoon: Head to the Green Bazaar. It’s a sensory explosion—try the local chocolates (Rakhat), dried fruits, and if you’re adventurous, shubat (fermented camel milk).
Evening: Take the cable car up to Kok-Tobe Hill at sunset. You’ll get a panoramic view of the city lights and the surrounding mountains.
High Altitudes (Medeu & Shymbulak)
You don’t have to go far to find world-class mountains.
Morning: Take a short bus or taxi to Medeu, the highest Olympic-sized skating rink in the world.
Midday: Hop on the gondola from Medeu to Shymbulak Ski Resort. Even in summer, the views are stunning. Continue to the highest point (Talgar Pass) at 3,200 meters.
Evening: Dine at one of the mountain restaurants. Kazakh hospitality is legendary—be sure to try Beshbarmak (the national dish of meat and pasta sheets).
The "Grand Canyon" of Central Asia
This is a long day trip (about 3 hours one way), but Charyn Canyon is non-negotiable.
The Valley of Castles: Walk through the 2km floor of the canyon. The red rock formations are surreal.
Tip: It gets incredibly hot here in the summer, so bring plenty of water. Most travelers book a guided day-tour for this leg to handle the logistics.
The Sunken Forest (Kaindy & Kolsai Lakes)
These lakes look like they belong in a fairy tale.
Lake Kaindy: Known for the “sunken forest”—dead spruce trees that rise out of the turquoise water like masts of ghost ships.
Kolsai Lakes: Often called the “Pearls of the Tien Shan.” If you have the energy, you can hike between the first and second lakes.
Note: This is a long drive from Charyn. Many people stay overnight in a traditional Guesthouse in Saty village to experience local village life.
Big Almaty Lake & Last Bites
Morning: Drive up to Big Almaty Lake (BAL). The water color changes from turquoise to emerald depending on the season. (Note: Check local access rules, as roads are sometimes closed for maintenance).
Afternoon: Return to the city for some last-minute souvenir shopping at Arbat Street, a pedestrian-friendly zone with local artists and musicians.
Evening: Enjoy a farewell dinner at a modern Kazakh fusion restaurant like Abay or Navat.
Departure Day
Carry light winterwear even in summer — nights get cool.

Avoid unregistered taxis; always use apps.
Don’t enter lakes during winter — ice can be thin.
